TheShortestTallman Reviews Boscov’s New Hartford!

Hi peeps! Boscov’s reached out to me, invited me to their store, gave me a tour, fed me their fudge, and asked if I would give my readers a review of their brand new store in New Hartford, NY.

Ya know. NBD or nuthin.

Brand spanking new!

Before coming to our area, I had heard of Boscov’s, and was pretty sure I’d been in one at some point. I had assumed they were like any other department store. After visiting, I see that, well yes, they are a department store, but I’m pretty happy to have one right here- it’s definitely a store that I will visit again and again because it has the stuff I want at great prices.

Anyway, let’s start at the beginning.

Upon entering, on their Charity Grand Opening day.

When they invited me to their opening, my best availability was on their very first day of opening, which was the very first day of their grand opening- Charity Day. I don’t know about you, but I don’t know of too many other stores that offer not only a grand opening with special values, but a way to support local charities. They offered to pay my $5 charity donation admission, but I insisted that I would be happy to pay, and if they would like to match, that’d be great. I chose the AK5K. Not sure how much was raised that day, I’ve googled for press releases about it but haven’t found anything yet.

So, I walk in, and then I am given my swag bag. (I know, right??) Some samples of their fudge (their fudge????), a pen, an adorable Happy Birthday pin that has a childhood picture of the senior Mr. Boscov (I believe he just turned 87), and a gift card for me to properly explore their store 😀

When we met up for the tour (the “we” was another local blogger, Kelly from MVParentOnline.com!), we were guided through the store by their Digital Marketing Director, the CEO (!!!!!), and along the way we met various top level people who were in town for their newest store. It was pretty fascinating hearing the Boscov peeps talk about their stores, how they choose their inventory, how they handle customer service and pricing, etc. The themes that kept coming up, over and over, were how important their relationships are with their vendors, how they try to keep to a “good, better, best” price model, and how they are trying to be different from other department stores- a one-stop shop for their customers. Each Boscov’s person we met was very passionate about their job, and they really seemed happy to be there. It wasn’t completely unlike what I overhear from the Tallest Tallman about how they try to run their business, with a focus on customer service and business relationships. It was neat hearing some of the inside scoop, and honestly these people seemed so down to earth and passionate about what they do, I felt totally comfortable supporting this store with my dollar. Haha- I think if Marcus Lemonis from “The Profit” was there, he’d say they nailed their “People-Product-Process” model! And, beyond the execs I met, the sales clerks that were all over the store were honestly awesome. There wasn’t anyone there who was “dud”! A smiling face was around every corner. It was nice, sometimes you walk into stores and you wonder if some of these employees have a pulse! These guys had pulses, haha!

OK— on to the fun stuff- pictures, products, prices.

Let’s start with Petites, since I checked out this department first. They had a pretty large selection, from formal wear, coats, trendier clothes, and of course, being a petites dept.,  a nice selection for seniors (i.e. ivory sweater, bottom center!)

Women’s and accessories. Lots of options, from premium brands to affordable chic.

They sell furniture. For realsies.

Window treatments. It’s nice to have another option in town with a nice display, since not a lot of stores carry window treatments, or may only have them in packages.

I think I took this picture to show you how comfy the layout is? Although, this picture doesn’t do it justice. You can see across the store pretty well, and there’s lots of sales desks around, with clear signage. Also, lots of those price checkers!

The infants/kids section is adorable!

Tons of domestics stuff- small appliances, seasonal, picture frames, candles… they literally have everything but the kitchen sink. I did not see sinks. And the prices were very competitive.

Crazy good deals! There were a few grand opening specials, but we were assured that the prices will always be as low as they can keep them. None of those games that other stores play. A month from now, you won’t see a difference in pricing from the grand opening sales.

My favorite department: their own candy! They carry Godiva and Lindor, but they have their own candies and fudge. I got to try a few different things, and they were all excellent. The fudge was out of this world! My fave was the chocolate-peanut butter.

I didn’t have a ton of time to shop since I had to get back to Tiny Tallman, but I did walk away with some super cute and super affordable petite tops for moi.

So, in a nutshell, I’ll definitely be back. I liked their breadth of departments, the unique features of the store, the one-stop-shop-ness of it all, and I feel comfortable supporting this business. They had a range of brands and price points in all departments, so no matter what you were looking for, from a simple gift to a wedding gift, you’d be good here. They had your typical department store features, but then some. Their children’s department was great, and I was assured that their prices are typically better than Carter’s. They don’t usually do coupons, and they explained that they try to make the shopping experience stress-free for the customer, so you’re not having to worry about coupons and fine print (I’m looking at you, store that rhymes with moles!) just to get a good buy. You could easily- EASILY- start and finish your holiday shopping in this one store (apparel/cosmetics/home goods/big toy section/etc etc etc).

Oh- one more thing- they have small-ish carts. Boscov’s for the win.

See ya soon, Boscov’s!
